— The Hardinghen Coal Mines

The legend goes that a farmer from the Réty and Hardinghen area discovered coal around 1660 beneath the ploughshare of his plough because, at that spot, coal was visible on the surface.

Antoine Hénichart is said to have been the first man to exploit coal in the Hardinghen region. The parish register of Hardinghen confirms this, and the discovery is said to have occurred in September 1691…
