About

An exceptional site

Built by the military, the “Poires” are extraordinary galleries and silos capable of holding up to 1,000 tonnes of wheat! In the event of siege, these reserves would supply 500 people for 1 year.
The architecture of this site is particularly sophisticated for its time: 3 levels, galleries and ventilation shafts, 11.50 meters underground, a 60-step descent… This site, truly unique of its kind, has been classified as a historic monument.

Ahead for tours

Located beneath the esplanade du Maréchal Leclerc, the underground Greniers à Blé can only be visited with a guide. Several guided tours are organized throughout the year by the Association Culturelle et Historique d’Ardres, notably in summer and during the Heritage Days weekend. These tours are free of charge for individuals.

For groups of more than 10 people, it is possible to make a specific request outside these dates, directly by e-mail to the association.

Unique and atypical, the Greniers à blé souterrains (or Poires) are an essential part of our region’s history.
