The Marsh of Guines
in Pays d’Opale
A marvelous ecosystem between land and water
A remarkable landscape between land and water, the marsh is a green place, as pleasant for families on a walk as for the wide variety of plant and animal species that live there.
A succession of diverse and rich backgrounds
To the delight of walkers, it is a mosaic of meadows and woods interspersed with canals and dotted with small ponds that stretches over an area of more than 1230 hectares.
On small wooden pontoons, admire the exceptional landscape that awaits you… You enter the path through a small peaty wood, before meeting the pollard willows, prostrating themselves. In front of you the smooth and peaceful marsh reveals itself, and under your feet, the pond shudders with the bursts of the small batrachians and their timid croaking. In the clear and shallow waters come to drink and feed the birds and highland oxen, rustic marsh cows, easily recognizable with their horns and their long tawny coats.

A place for observing flora and fauna
Because the marsh is also the privileged shelter of a large number of plant and animal species. Rare birds, herons, protected flowers, as well as a multitude of fishes, insects and amphibians find refuge in the shallow waters and the surrounding wooded and flowery areas. The marsh is thus home to many rare species, for which it is the only habitat.
